All the escaped prisoner from Deer Island in Boston wanted was for guards to name the six kids from "The Brady Bunch." Not a typical request, to be sure, but CBS executives are beaming at the idea that one of their TV shows carries such bargaining power. As the story goes, a prisoner, who was not identified, climbed onto the roof of a Deer Island building one day last week and refused to come down until guards could come up with all six Bradys. After five hours, guards could think of just five of the kids' names, but he settled on that and came down. "I'm proud, I'm really proud," said Sherwood Schwartz, creator and executive producer of "The Bradys," speaking at a gathering of TV critics here. "The Brady Bunch," which aired on ABC from 1969-1974, starred Florence Henderson as a mother of three who married Robert Reed, the father of three. The result was "The Brady Bunch;" six kids whose names have become a tough trivia question. The show is making a comeback on CBS as an hour-long series beginning next month. Schwartz said he thinks the prisoner's request says a lot about the people who watched the show. "Here's a man -- an escaped convict, he stole a car, I think -- who was ringed with guys with rifles, and he's demanding that they tell him the names of the six Brady kids," Schwartz said. "They said they wouldn't shoot him if he came down, so to test them as trustworthy people, he said 'if you can name the Brady kids, I'll have faith in you.' "In other words," Schwartz said, "people who watch 'The Brady Bunch,' or now 'The Bradys,' are hopefully trustworthy people." Added Henderson, mom of the TV brood of six, "I often wonder why, but I do get lots of mail from prisoners." Henderson said she heard about the incident from her two sons, who just flew in from Boston over the weekend. Did it surprise her? "Nothing surprises me about the 'Brady Bunch'...or about Boston, for that matter!" And for the record, the kids are named Greg, Marsha, Peter, Jan, Bobby and Cindy. You never know when someone might ask. -- The Boston Globe, Jan 15, 1990 p.38
