From ben at glaver.org Sat Dec 11 15:24:41 2021 From: ben at glaver.org (Ben Cohen) Date: Sat, 11 Dec 2021 15:24:41 -0500 Subject: [boc-l] It's time for goodbyes Message-ID: <20211211202441.GA6953@gate.glaver.org> Folks, It's been a lengthy ride, but it's time to bring things to a close - and for a few reasons. 1) The list is "officially" down to 52 members (two of which are me, actually). Recently, MS / Office forced a "mass unsubscription" event by rejecting quite a few (around 10 or so, I think?) email addresses. That was interpreted by the list management software as "those addresses have gone away". 2) There's been no significant activity for quite a while. [Granted, the last bit was discussing Re-Imaginos and the 2nd album, for which I was grateful and hadn't known, but, even so - this just isn't an active community any more.] But - I've saved the "best" for last... 3) ISPNet, which has very graciously hosted the email list for a very long time, is closing its doors and getting rid of its servers. That process needs to be complete by the end of December, 2021. As such, the underpinnings of the list are going away as well. Given the lack of activity, I just don't see any significant reason to try and migrate the list to another host / format / whatever. History will not be completely lost, though - the mailing list archives (and everything else that's happened) will remain available as a text-format archive at: https://www.glaver.org/ftp/boc-l ... for which I am also grateful to Terry Kennedy, a friend of mine for forever, who was also instrumental in allowing me to use ISPNet for hosting the mailing list. If anyone would like to contact me, I'm available both here (ben at glaver.org) or my more "normal" public email, (bmcatt at gmail.com). So, to close this in a possibly overly cliched manner: Email lists don't fear the reaper, Nor do the members, mods, or hosts. [Ok, yeah, that sucked, but what do you expect for off the top of my head, huh? :)] It's been a blast, all! And we do still have a little bit more time here, for anyone who might wish to reminisce or anything else. Heck, I'll toss in a couple of my own: 1) From the very early days of the list, all of us scrambling to try and understand the lyrics from so many BOC songs - and congratulating ourselves when we finally figured something out. 2) For a while, Al (Bouchard) was actually a member of the list. He announced when he first started The Brain Surgeons. Right around the time of the first album ("Eponymous"), he talked about how they were going to be performing at CBGB's in NYC. I lived right across the river in Jersey City, so I made it a point to go there and see the show. 3) Not sure how much people are aware of the ... notoriety? ... that the list has for the current members of BOC. Eric basically hates (hated?) our very existence because we tended to agree with the "alternate" explanations for why things fell apart (Al leaving, etc.). Many years ago, I went to see BOC perform at The Stony Pony (in Asbury Park, NJ). After the show, those of use who stayed crowded up to the satin ropes since they were doing a meet-and-shake-hands with the fans sort of thing. I was there, and when Eric got to me, I commented that I was the moderator for the BOC-L mailing list, as I put my hand out. He proceeded to just ignore me (pulling his own hand *back*, lest he shake mine) and went on to the next person. Yep, that's right... I was snubbed by Eric Bloom. Don't believe anyone else noticed (or cared), but I still think it was incredibly petty of him. :D Ben From bewlay68 at yahoo.com Sat Dec 11 20:15:42 2021 From: bewlay68 at yahoo.com (bewlay68 at yahoo.com) Date: Sat, 11 Dec 2021 19:15:42 -0600 Subject: [boc-l] It's time for goodbyes In-Reply-To: <20211211213248.GA18043@gate.glaver.org> References: <20211211213248.GA18043@gate.glaver.org> Message-ID: The only time I?ve been to a show that had any interaction with the fans post show was with Donald Roeser. Just to clarify, I wasn't suggesting that you were stopping the list because of social media. It was more of a general statement. Because, let's face it, without social networks, there likely would be a lot more mailing lists still around. People have just moved on to more technologically advanced methods of conversation. Not much we can do about it. >> They will be the death of mailing lists :( > > To be completely honest, I've contemplated shutting the list down several > times over the past few years - mainly due to, as I just noted above, lack of > activity. If we don't have anything to talk about, do we really need a soapbox > with a "captive" audience? I get it. But why have conversations died down? You said it yourself, there are only 50 or so folks left on here. There used to be more, weren't there? Do you think they lost interest in BOC or HW? Some, possibly. All? Doubtful. There are many reasons to leave a list, and I'm not saying everyone did this, but I suspect many just found other places to chat. > 2) For a while, Al (Bouchard) was actually a member of the list. Couldn't stay after the show though as I wasn't feeling well by the time it ended, but the show was cool and remains a good memory. Can't remember when it was exactly... probably early 2000's, in a venue near Marseilles (in France). Alex. As Ben has pointed out, it seems unreasonable to go on a search for a new home for a list with 52 members and only a few postings per month. But fear not! BOC-L will live on at: https://www.glaver.org/boc-l Please note that this is a DIFFERENT URL than the one Ben posted previously and will get you to a much faster service than the prior URL. The old https://www.glaver.org/ftp/boc-l and ftp://ftp.glaver.org/boc-l URLs now have a single readme.txt file that points to the new location. The new server has also had all of the mailing list archives from 1990-2001 uploaded and you have the same variety of ways to access them that you did back when the list server was live. I've peppered a few humorous (to me and Ben, at least) things throughout the new pages for your enjoyment. It has been a pleasure being the "person behind the curtain" who has provided the hard- ware and software to run this list continually for the past 25+ years of its existence. You've all been a great bunch. Feel free to continue to post your thoughts on BOC-L/HW/related acts and what the list itself has meant to you over the years. I will collect all list postings between now and the server shutdown and make sure they are preserved for posterity at the new site. Oh, and I wasn't really taking it as such - no worries. On the other hand, there being a lot more mailing lists around wouldn't necessarily mean that any of them would have signfiicantly longer life-spans. > People have just moved on to more technologically advanced methods of > conversation. Not much we can do about it. *shrug* ... I'm used to being very "old school". By nature, I'm very technically proficient (I've literally been around computers my entire life), but I'm also generally a bit of a "late adopter" when it comes to new stuff. Or, to paraphrase (badly) the meme I saw: - People who don't know computers: "Yes, it's great. My new refrigerator tracks how much stuff is in it and will build a shopping list for me and then send it to the store." - People who know computers well: "The most advanced piece of technology I have is my printer and I keep a shotgun handy in case it starts acting suspiciously." > I get it. Some, possibly. All? Doubtful. > There are many reasons to leave a list, and I'm not saying everyone did > this, but I suspect many just found other places to chat. Well - I will say that our "attrition" rate, over the duration of the list, was *EXTREMELY* low. Most people who found their way here tended to stay - barring some things like email address changes and such. The recent "mass unsubscription" event was entirely on MS and outlook.com that just blanketed the list with "nope, no one here by that name" responses, blowing a gaping hole in the membership list. Honestly, I think it's more to do with the primary topic of the list. Yeah, BOC *finally* released an actual studio album, but it'd been so long, I'm not sure anyone really cared. I can't speak so much for the HW side of things, but I strongly suspect it's similar. So... if there's not anything new to talk about, then ... there's not anything new to talk about. > I remember my surprise when I first joined BOC-L and realized Al was a > member haha. Hey - it was a show at CBGBs. Plus, they only had a limited set list, so - it was as good as it could be, I think - without doing covers and stuff of things that Al probably knew all too well. I'd just like to share a few of my own before we turn out the lights in a few days. Places I have worked have hosted this list continuously since 1995. First at St. Peter's and later at various in- carnations of an ISP I've been a partner at. I was not a regular (or even irregular) poster to the list, but I've read the posts when I've had time and I've been amazed at the various points of view and ideas that were expressed here. I can only remember two occasions where I had to actively "step in" to keep things civil. That's probably a record for a list I've hosted for 25+ years. I want to thank you all for participating, whether as posters or just readers. It has certainly been quite the trip. The final server shutdown will likely be sometime on Saturday the 18th or Sunday the 19th. I figured I'd post this well in advance so anyone's final thoughts can be recorded for posterity. The (somewhat) new and (very) improved BOC-L archives are now available at https://www.glaver.org/boc-l and after this server is shut down, December's posts will be added to the list archives there. A bunch of the other material there is somewhat out-of-date (like lyrics, discographies, and so on). If any of you want to help with "freshening things up", please drop either Ben or myself a note. In closing, I thought I'd post something that sort of just popped into my head ("Lyrics of Unknown Origin", perhaps?). I hope you like it... This is a sad post to receive, but not unexpected. It officially signals the end of an era for me. BOC-L is formally closing, which is right and proper given its long-term decline in traffic. I thank Ben and Terry for keeping this list going for what seems like an eternity in Internet time. It has been a wonderful community and incredible resource over the many years I've been subscribed. My thanks to everyone. Perusing the archives our Humble Moderators have put up in "The Final Resting Place of BOC-L" I'm shocked to realise I've been a BOC-L subscriber for a little over 31 years! According to the early archives, the list was founded on 22nd September, 1990 and I made my first posting on 24th September, 1990. Back then, I lived in the UK and I heard about it from an e-mail friend I had in the USA---Ken Yousten (RIP)---who saw the subscription notice on Usenet and forwarded it to me because he knew I'd be interested. (We didn't have a Usenet feed at my university back then.) Looking at those early archives, it looks like I was one of the first subscribers---even before it was BOC-L and Steve Swann redistributed the posts himself. BOC-L has been, for me, a positive force and an unambiguously happy experience. It originated in a pre-WWW area, when information wasn't as readily available as it is now. The BOC-L community circulated an immense amount of information about Hawkwind, BOC, and related "imaginative rock" bands. Discussions were plentiful and people were incredibly generous with their knowledge and help. I guess most everything I know about Hawkwind or BOC came ultimately from this list, or from leads supplied by list members. There were lots of long-term subscribers and at times they felt a bit like an extended family. BOC-L really was a *social* media portal well before the likes of Facebook, Instagram, and the likes. BOC-L was a special community. I remember various BOC-L projects over the years: not just the online ones like curating discographies or figuring out lyrics, but also others like the t-shirt projects (I recall scanning the candidate artwork for that so it could be voted on); the "Hawkwind Covers All" tapes project; and others than blurred the line between "online" and "IRL" (in real life). Does anyone remember looking out for other "Nethawks" t-shirts at gigs? I also consider it super-cool that Albert was on the list for a time and we were able to get a front-row seat to the birth of The Brain Surgeons. Like others, I can't help but wonder if the passing of BOC-L is part of the passing of the era of e-mail mailing lists. Maybe it is a product of its time. I'm of an age when e-mail lists were my "social media", and so have never "got into" modern social media forums like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and so on. (Cue King Crimson's "I am a dinosaur" lyric.) I suspect the reverse is true of most people new to the Internet today. Maybe that's why traffic fell off: nobody thought to join a mailing list, and so the new sources of information and community were to be found elsewhere. I'd sort of assumed that new Hawkwind and BOC chatter was happening on Facebook or some Web forum---I just never knew where. (That's the other thing I liked about mailing lists: the posts came to you; you didn't have to go hunt them out on a forum.) Another music mailing list I was on for years that was as active and fervent as BOC-L---the Gov't Mule mailing list EMULE---also sort of petered out and vanished about the same time as BOC-L. "All things must pass." Farewell BOC-L. I will miss you, but I sure enjoyed the ride! I wish you all well. Cheers, Paul. Firstly, I didn't see this coming and it's really sad, because BOC-L has been a big part of my life outside work at times and still a significant thread at other times ever since I got onto it in, er, I think 1996 (wow). But on the other hand, after a few days I thought, wouldn't it be worse if the list had outlasted the bands? However pleased Eric Bloom may or may not be about that, it's still got to be the better outcome... Secondly, thanks to all who have run it, especially Ben and Terry but also Steve Swann as the voice of quiet authority at a lower level when one of those was needed. And thanks to everyone who's posted and kept it going that way, of course. Since we were briefly telling stories about meeting B?C, as well, I will say that they did come out for the first gig I saw, at the Forum in Kentish Town, London, 1998, on the Heaven Forbid tour. I was there with I think Carl and Charlie Grant (Charles the Grinning Boy), and Eric and Buck, plus Danny Miranda, all came out for a drink afterwards and it was just the BOC-L people left waiting for them. Charlie hugged pretty much all of them into submission and got photos with them all (on a real camera, no smartphones then), and I just about nerved myself up to shake Buck's hand (nerved mainly because of awe, but also, I admit, because I was so afraid of accidentally saying what was top of my mind, which was 'gosh, you looked taller on stage') and then talked to Danny instead because it was less challenging. But Eric kept his shades on and front up throughout, so that tracks. I got onto BOC-L because someone who was used to watching Usenet and knew me as someone who had discovered Blue ?yster Cult and was evangelising about them everywhere, and had noticed a related group (who remembers what?) to which someone at our university was posting. So I mailed him and it was Carl Anderson, and he said, more or less, well, yeah, there's that group but I'm on a mailing list that's much better. And then I picked up a HW best-of because of talk here and the rest is now archive material... In that time I've made friends and piled up debts to people (some unpaid, mainly to Big Mike, now I think about it, for beers and his unwanted t-shirts, and to Jill Strobridge for coming down for my 40th birthday, and some returned (people I stayed with for gigs and ten for interviews whom I was able to host in turn, or who sent me stuff that I sent stuff back to--here Mike Holmes most of all, but also Keith Henderson), and goodness knows where Carl and I stand on any cosmic tally by now, so much music and other knowledge have we exchanged. I've been to BOC-L members' weddings (maybe just one, but still), heard some incredible gig stories and begun to amass a few of my own, joined in with trying to moderate our resident lunatics now and then, not posted as much as I should have, lamented our thankfully-small number of dead (Mike C. most recently), and had a generally marvellous time. And I've found out about so much music, through recommendations, the Last Tapes of May exchanges and just through people's ObCD tags. And indeed links to Aural Innovations, which I'd probably not have found out about otherwise. Thanks to everyone, for so much. There are people I will keep in touch with, I'm sure, and people I will mean to and forget to, so everybody, please, this e-mail is good for the foreseeable future, if you're not normally in England and you get here, or if you're passing through Yorkshire, or just want to say hi, please use it. There will still be Nethawks out there even if the ship has landed. Stay well and safe everyone, and maybe I'll see you at a gig yet. Bye bye!
