Not that I was expecting much, Onward didn't blow my mind either. BotE and TMtYL at least had a couple great tunes, I thought... It's fine tho - I don't look to HW to provide exhilarating space-rock anymore, there are enough younger bands these days filling the void. I have made a GREAT shift towards buying my CDs and Vinyl at Discogs, so much cheaper than eBay, and better organised than eBay and more user friendly as making payments etc, and as regards which release you actually want from multiple editions, etc. I have contributed some CDs and Cassettes as well. Glad to be of help in such a massive database. But you still can make some KILLER deals on cheap "mainstream" CDs on eBay though. Like Alisa of Space Mirrors wrote, i am tempted to agree that When The Machine Stops is the most solid and good HW album since Alien 4 (but i loved DH as well). Its beefy, blissed and rocky stuff. I like it alot after about 6 spins all the way. The fact that it is a concept album based on a literary story from 1909 is very updated and modern, despite being a over 100 year old SF concept. I like it better than TMTYL, BOTE and Onward so.. yes the best HW main album since the 90s. Christian (president) -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: Edward Ka-Spel of The Legendary Pink Dots and i correspond occasionally by email and FB and he mentioned the new MOJO has a big Syd Barrett special.. i wrote back...: I got issues with Floyd as well as The Doors. The direction PF took around right after the biggie DSOTM was just an inflatible Valium experiment... lots of dross albums like WYWH, AHM, Animals.. they basically used Syd as an effigy for DSOTM or The Wall... like oh yeah shine on bro and all they did was betray or capitalize on his "crazy ness". Morrison was saner, or Syd was saner ... hmm.. i like to think Syd was a spur of the moment "all the aces" where as Jim was more moody or brooding, fancying himself as Dionysis or whatever. Syd's madcapness was all out punk like Sex Pistols.. the way Jim ACTED was like punk. I just revisited some of the mid period Doors albums, as all i have on my iPod for a decade was the first album and LA Woman. Those two are slick and solid true shit all the way. Having listened to Strange Days its like a lo fi sequel to The Doors ST album, and Waiting For The Sun a slight return there too... Morrison Hotel suffers from super lo fi production, Soft Parade is kinda "krunk" lets do it big. Piper and Saucerful will always tower above any PF album since. As Waters/Guilmore is a whole different eh Animal than Syd being some kind of LSD sorcerer of Punk. I love Meddle and Obscured By Clouds and like More, DSOTM, bits of Ummagumma are cool.. but have no relation to The Wall or Animals other than being bombarded with the The Wall movie posters all over Oslo when i was 10! Its all "money its a drag" thing "hey teacher leave us kids alone" plod plod riff riff rawk. Catchy and calculated madness from a band that got too big. A lot of people seem to have gone over to face book which I use, but, "it sucks," and I find it hard. Also there is the Hawkwind fan site which Mike C. tells me has been active. I want more feedback on the new album! Like Hawkwind this list was way ahead of its time, I got on board with my late husband Chris Bruce, who knew computers like I know my name, but I took to it slowly. years ago, although in the way back, (90's) he did the postings. I've made a lot of friends on this site, I realize that many have become disillusioned with the more modern HW, from what I've read anyway, but since the shows are selling out there must be something people have to report. I have also had the privilege of meeting Albert Bouchard , here. I do not think that it's just you and me left on the forum. . The list does not stop here! And just for the record i live in the cuntry side of the cuntry of Norway. I just laugh at clownish english words like twat, cunt etc that are used to hurt, i like words that create and reveal things, like if you are gonna call someone a cunt you may as well write a book about cunts get it printed and sell it to the cunt. As most people here know i have a great fictional psychological life that i am either a nazi, or that i am a full blooded Jewish male. I guess neither anymore as all the stigma has worn off on either and just this old soul remains. LOL. I like to deconstruct rock music culture, subculture, drug culture in ways i used to only do in comic books i drew. My publisher in Oslo burned down, i was kicked off the FM radiorakel slot and Aural Innovations is no more. So then i am tempted to bomb out BOC-l. I wont do it again, seriously, alot of that shit i wrote after my review of the new HW album (a post no one replied to! only replies to my stupid Hells Angels wheelchair posts etc) so lets get a discussion going on When The Machine Stops, everyone. I seem to recall making this point, after a fashion, when I posted the request for feedback. In case there was any question, both Mr. Mumford and Mr. White have been placed on moderation status. Allow me to state that I am unlikely to actually let either one post - certainly not without an apology by Mr. White. And Mr. Mumford will discover that my patience has been tried for the *LAST* time. You *WERE* warned - repeatedly. I have been the sysadmin for the various servers that have hosted BOC-L for the last 20+ years. While I don't generally believe in limiting speech ("censorship" is only censorship if done by / for a government), anyone's right to post and to have their posts read is based on the consensus of the community they're participating in. The stuff that's come through this list in the past 5 weeks is downright bizarre and has definitely moved beyond the community's willingness to tolerate this kind of stuff. I've made some changes to the list parameters for Ben, which will give him (hopefully) the tools he needs to reign in any further be- havior like this before you folks even see it. This should restore some normality to the list. Other outlets are available for people to post their stream-of-[un]consciousness rants, ranging from Red- dit to /dev/null. Since this issue has only been going on for 5 weeks or so, there is probably no need to remove the posts from the archives. That is an option for Ben and myself in the event that this type of thing happens again. Abusive posters (or at least their posts) can be "disappeared" from this list if necessary. We now return you to your regularly scheduled (if low-traffic) discussions of BOC, Hawkwind, and so on. I think HawkEaster would have been more enjoyable if they hadn't played the same gig two nights - one night should have been given over to just enjoying some old and less usual numbers. On tour though they really shone and the interplay between Haz & Dave were a big part of that. And yes, still waiting on the single. Meanwhile I read The Machine Stops for the first time since school. It's surprising in a lot of ways. There's the author forseeing what we'd now call the Internet; the concept that this would atomise people; the dystopian idea that some kind of eco-catastrophe would drive us underground; the loss of knowledge; the generally downbeat ending. Many of these ideas became currency for later stories such as War of the Worlds (underground cities). Rollerball (knowledge of how to control the machinery being lost), THX118 (pretty much a rewrite of the story itself), and countless 1970s SF dystopian stories feature a technological atomisation and downbeat ending. So all in all a great choice of story and an excellent musical realisation of it. I'm saddened by the folks who've fallen out of the airlocks on this one because I do think they're missing something. Definitely need to listen to it a few more times. I like it, but it?s a concept album; and like several others, probably only going to listen to it when I have enough time to listen to it entire, rather than pulling out tracks to listen to. Plus, with the gloriousness that was the light show, it?s almost as if it should be released to DVD; it would hold together fairly well as a concept video, too. Really, I only hear one duffer on the album itself, and dangnabbit, but Hexagone is very earwormy; I have been having a devil of a time getting it out of my head. I definitely think it?s a grower. The concerts I managed to catch, on the other hand, were excellent. Like everyone else, watching Haz and Dave riff was a thing of true beauty. Here there is still a relaxed freedom and ease of reading that isn't really available elsewhere so I'd be sorry to lose it completely and it would be nice to get back to the easy comfort of reading and enjoying the occasional message as it drifts in. cheers Jill > On 09 May 2016 at 10:24 Terry Kennedy > wrote: > > > TL;DR - "Don't make me come down here again." > > I have been the sysadmin for the various servers that have hosted > BOC-L for the last 20+ years. The basic concept of Hari Seldon's "Psychohistory" is key here. Set it up as a kinda Star Wars space opera with Seldon's hologram playing the Obi Wan Kenobi role as he prophesises the social shifts over the generations. Kung-Fu style flashbacks o Seldon's actual work would fill out the picture and the background whereas the grand space battles and political plotting would trace out the history and its match to Seldon's prophecies. A big advantage for a film franchise is that as the generations move on, the old stars have to give way to new ones, keeping down costs of paying superstar actors - who'd be relegated to cameos in the later series. Wrinkles would come in with Mule-like anomalies in the way history pans out. It'd be Space Opera in the most classic sense, and it could so easily be done well in a way which would draw the crowds. Definitely. I'm actually quite surprised that it hasn't been done yet. And I really should reread the books. I used to reread those (along with "The Lord of the Rings") regularly when I was young. Unsurprisingly the beast concerned never features again - undoubtedly driven to extinction! ?Yeah I think Foundation might make a good tv series not least because the characters are all renewed at regular intervals so there is no need for actor continuity and quite a lot of it is political intrigue rather than action - Wolf Hall-ish rather than Game of Thrones. I would be inclined not to include the encyclopedia entries tho' simply because the narrative tension is whether the Seldon Plan is still working or has failed and the entries rather remove that uncertainty.Jill Sent from my Samsung device -------- Original message -------- From: Jerry via boc-l Date: 14/05/2016 22:54 (GMT+00:00) To: asg at mvdbase.com, BOC / Hawkwind Discussion List Cc: Jerry Subject: Re: [boc-l] And now... a word from our sponsor On 5/10/2016 10:21 AM, Alex S. I will, been listening to a lot of IQ, Subturania, (that's a long concept album), and Astra, we caught them at NEAR Fest and thought they were great, and we really love both of their albums. Nice to hear some good Prog from here I wasn't aware of. Both bands are superb, if you check out the IQ peace, it's over an hour and a half long, so you'll want some time, I really enjoy the album Frequency, the title track and "Province of the King," are both really great tracks, I think Frequency is the best album to initially check out first, it was for me, I'm sure this is all old news to most in this group. Traveling with HW was not only 1 of the best things Chris and I did, and some of the best times I had in life, I also learned a lot, occasionally different band members would talk with me about music theory, and the history of different aspects of music.
