I quite enjoyed the Majipoor books (particularly the original trilogy) and I still pimp Lord Valentine?s Castle to people looking for good fantasy! BTW, any list folk coming to Worldcon in a couple of weeks? I had mercifully forgotten this book and wish you hadn't reminded me. This is of course strictly IMO (my own opinion) and others may well choose to hold a differing view but as far as I am concerned this is the nastiest, most unpleasant book I have ever come across. I read some of it - most of it in the end I guess and very much wished I hadn't. I'm not entirely sure what he intended - some catharsis perhaps or understanding, who knows but I have never since and will never read another book written by him. I get why Jill thinks this way about the book, though the "not another book" comment seems to me to misunderstand the craft of writing. None of Silverberg's other books are like Dying Inside and I'm sure Jill would find some, such as Nightwings, quite lyrical. I'd say Dying Inside is the most mature book on telepathy that I've ever read, and one of the greats of SF. It really ought to be a play or a movie. So, Mike, have you read Susan Cooper?s Mandrake? I am looking forward to Children of the future from your description. I believe that 1 unlike the Silverberg is easily available to me, through my service, and to think I looked Everywhere I knew to in order to find Dying Inside, and to have it pop up on youtube, where I probably should have looked first. I?m glad I found it. Take good care, and it was nice to read your posting, and the 1 from Jonathan, too. I hope you?re well, and wish you both all the best. I'd be amazed if you can't find Wynham's "Midwich Cuckoos". It's a classic of Brit SF literature, like The Chrysalids and War of the Worlds. It was made into the movie "Village of The Damned" (and remade later with Christopher Reeve). There were also a few spinoff movies such as "Children of the Damned etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Midwich_Cuckoos Now that I think of it, I'm surprised Hawkwind have never done a song based on this.
