But it's weird - having the original five back onstage together again - albeit however briefly - and I mean, who'd ever have thought they'd see that again? - now that occasion should have filled me with great joy but it didn't. Watching that fantastic "Death Valley Nights" clip (and yes, there were missed cues and words etc, but that didn't matter in the slightest) drove it home to me just what we've been missing all these years - all that potential creativity, all those unwritten potential future gems - never to be... Now, obviously, you and Joe are a well-spring of great songs these days - and I'm dearly looking forward to the new Blue Coupe record, but BOC is BOC - for me, an entity that was greater than the sum of its parts... watching the clips from last night, it was supposed to be a celebration, but for me, it was more like a wake for might have been, for what SHOULD have been... Like I said, it's weird, but that's probably just me... but I'm truly glad you found it to be a good experience - and I hope Joe had a good time also - even if it was just back to playing bass... :-) From bewlay68 at YAHOO.COM Tue Nov 6 14:53:52 2012 From: bewlay68 at YAHOO.COM (gary shindler) Date: Tue, 6 Nov 2012 11:53:52 -0800 Subject: BOC Setlist In-Reply-To: <0F4ACACC-6829-4BDA-9DDC-149FB515F313@gmail.com> Message-ID: That's great. Glad you like them! The area I was in was having a good time the whole evening, especially some good natured snarky remarks (my favorite being a guy behind me who said responded when Eric said they were going to make the sound louder, "OK, but not Too Loud.") When Albert came out it our whole section became electric. There was a young man and his girlfriend behind us who came just to see Al, says Al played drums in his basement. I felt badly standing up sometimes because I know I was blocking their view. It wasn't the best BOC show I've ever seen, and certainly far from the worst (which has been most of them in the past 10 years), but it was definitely one of the most fun and special ones I'd been too. "Featured at the local laundrette!" Sometime in the 1990s when they began the 'On Tour Forever' mantra, they sold a shirt at the shows that was Godzilla destroying a theater whose marque read "Tonight Only, Puppet Show and Blue Oyster Cult." Mine is somewhere. Speaking of shirts: The one sold at this event is so minimalist as if it were inspired by a knock off! Oh it's a great track alright, but with such limited time - and no Patti - I think Cities and Hot Rails would have been better than OD'd and Career to end with... I mean, Cities is such an important song to the story of BOC that it's VERY strange that THAT song could get chopped in a show to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band... Gotta question - everyone was speculating how on earth could you tune out what must have been a madly discordant cowbell chorus going on behind your head during DFTR - I know it must have been politically expedient to give everyone "something to do" during that last song, but 3 cowbells!!... One other thing we were wondering also... at the end of the night, and you're all saying your goodbyes, how was it left? Any mention of "we must do this again sometime" (hopefully not in 40 years) or anything that left a door open for such a thing again in the future, because there's no hiding the vibe those last few songs got (as well as Death Valley Nights, of course) and the electricity that was in the air... hard to tell what EB was thinking - his expression doesn't seem to change much (he could be winning the lottery or having his foot sawn off, you'd struggle to guess which) - but Buck REALLY seemed to be having a good time... I think he was a little nervous at first and then, with what seemed to be the never-ending meet-and-greet (which he enjoyed only in retrospect), he seemed anxious to get out of there. OTOH I just got a nice email from him and I'm hoping we can do some creative type stuff again soon. We got caught up the moment and misjudged the amount of time we had. We fully intended to do Cities and maybe Hot Rails as the inevitable encore but the hall was pulling the plug on us. Maxwells (in Hoboken) would have let us play all night? As for the cowbells, I felt like the Buck character in the SNL skit and the idea of stopping the track to ask the real Bruce Dickinson (who was there) if it wasn't too much made me almost lose it.;-) On Fri, Nov 9, 2012 at 3:01 PM, Ralph wrote: > > Too bad Patti couldn't make it but I was still glad to play Career. As-well-as, cut the drum and bass solos in Godzilla. Great to have Gil Blanco County played, and frankly that might have been nice to have had Albert, Joe and Allen on it. I have to take a step back though: It's easy to complain about 'what should have been' and 'what I would like' but there is no denying that this was on a pedestrian level a very good and reliable show (that sounds like a complaint again doesn't it?), but more so on a fan-boys level an awesome show to have brought out some rarities, have a good spirit and brought back together the original band. AND this IS NOT a reunion tour. The original NYC show scheduled was not to have a reunion, we just got lucky that the rescheduling allowed it. Like I said (roughly) after the show that night, this was a powerful and good time warts and all. Thank you Albert for your music past and present being a part of the soundtrack of my life, and in your communications if you would pass that along to Joe, Allen, Buck and Eric I would appreciate it. --Eric On Fri, 09 Nov 2012 15:01:16 -0500, Ralph wrote: >> Too bad Patti couldn't make it but I was still glad to play Career. While quite a lot of BOC, and specifically _Imaginos_ is many places could be said to sound of dark things lurking in the woods at night, `Gil Blanco County' on the SFG album sounds of sun through trees in the daytime, so I don't know quite how it must have wound up in 1988... Yeah, the SFG Gil Blancos have a very West-Coast kind of vibe ... verging on folky. Like bits of The Byrds getting mixed in with bits of the Airplane; one can imagine an Acid-Test-era Dead having a go at it and mangling the vocals (and probably much else! :)). If I may get very freaky with unexpected comparisons, it recalls early Fairport Convention for that matter! As of November 12, this problem has been remedied. If you have not yet downloaded the four bonus concerts, it will download all songs as intended. They are louder, more bass, more punchy and more detail. I wouldn't go as far as to say they are as good as the first set of remasters, which I think are about as good as it gets. The difference is most noticable on Mirrors & CE where the original CDs sounded very thin indeed, however, even CN & Imaginos are much improved which I didn't really expect. Rarities disc varies quite a bit. The 4 tracks from the bootleg EP don't really sound any better than versions I've heard before. The 5 Mirrors era live tracks are great versions, nice to have. The couple of cover versions are great, the SWU demo is not as good quality as the 4 tracks we got on the BOC 1st album remaster. Radios Appear is effectively a best of the 4 download concerts. I already had all those 4 concerts in some form or another. The captured live one I had on 3 LP radio station vinyl and the others I had on bootleg CD or downloaded. These new downloads are the best they have ever sounded. Well worth the money. Like most of us on this list, I have all the original LPs, then all the original CDs - many of which I paid import prices in HMV / Tower London back in the day - and then all the remaster CDs as well. This box set is still worth the money in my opinion. Only thing is it will be a shame if we don't get any more official BOC releases. And... whats with putting the extra track "Substitute" on the promo only sampler? Now I'm gonna have to shell out more cash on eBay for that. I don't really want to spend $50 on one new track... Basically same thing that happened with "God Save Blue Oyster Cult From Themselves" disc has happened again. The rest of the book is photos. Whilst on the subject of reading materials, if anyone on the list hasn't read Martin Popoff's book "Blue Oyster Cult: Secrets Revealed!" its well worth reading and can be purchased as a PDF download at www.zunior.com (which is where I got mine) for the bargain price of $8.88. Just go into the website and search Blue Oyster Cult to find it. Message-ID: >From the article, "On Second Thought: 20 Hit Songs Originally Written for Other Artists -- Part 2" on spinner.com: "Run to You," Bryan Adams After Blue Oyster Cult producer Bruce Fairbairn asked Adams and writing partner Jim Vallance to pen a song for the band, the two studied the guitar intro from "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" -- Blue Oyster Cult's biggest hit. With that signature guitar intro as inspiration, they came up with "Run to You." But after giving it to the band, Fairbairn reported, "They don't like the song." It was also rejected by .38 Special before Adams recorded it himself. In 1984, it became his first top ten single. It might have clicked for the band as well, although from a selfish point of view I'm glad it didn't:? the only thing I would have found more mortifying than BOC doing mediocre rock songs (which we got some of, anyway) would have been them doing mediocre rock songs that charted big and further eroded the mystique.? By which I don't mean the Live Gospel / Luftwaffe mystique, but the genuine strangeness and beauty that permeates their best work and set them apart from everyone else out there. -Chris
