This is tremendously sad news. I knew he'd been battling poor health over the past years but never realised it was this serious. I thought he'd put it behind him and was on a bit of an upswing, health wise, but alas not. :-( I remember seeing Huw playing a blinder with Hawkwind back in the late 80s; I'll never forget that. RIP, Huw. Cheers, Paul. Sad news and my condolences to his family and very many friends. I've had more than a few pints with Huw over the years and always found him good company and ready to chat to fans. I'll raise a glass tonight and put on my Glastonbury '81 CD - a gig I attended and fondly remember standing at the base of the metal pyramid, looking up at Huw and hearing his guitar. RIP Huw. Huw had been a member of Hawkwind at the very beginning, and then again at a couple points in their history. He also released several solo albums and with his Lloyd-Langton group. And he had his fingers in various other projects over the past decades. Throughout Hawkwind's history they have had MANY members. But in terms of real musicianship, Huw was among the best. He was an amazing guitarist, and a wonderful songwriter. So this show is a tribute, and farewell to Huw. I also could not find a track that stood out as being a grabber. However on the 3rd listen I think HLO is a grower, I have 4 legs good 2 legs bad going round in my head, and the rest now that I am getting familiar with it is good. It just did not grab me from the off like Blood of Earth did. I think Dave's album is definitely his best since the Agents of Chaos CD. There are the inevitable remakes of other songs included, and quite like this version of We Took The Wrong Step (I always thought the vocals on the original sounded like someone with a lisp which gave it a charm of it's own). I am not sure I remember an official live "Flaming Telepaths" on CD (though I think I have at least one '70s-era bootleg with it). Admittedly, discogs.com says it was "Recorded Live At Bonds International Casino New York June 16, 1981", which I think has appeared as the "Tales from the Psychic Wars" bootleg, which does not contain (AFAIK) a "Flaming Telepaths", so I suspect that the recording details that discogs.com give for the live "Dr. Music" on the 12" -- "Recorded Live At Nassau Coliseum New York Oct. 17, 1980" -- are actually the details for the live "Flaming Telepaths". That's the same show that contributed "Black Blade" to "Extraterrestrial Live" (and was filmed for release as the "Black & Blue" video with Dio-era Sabbath), so it seems plausible that other recorded performances from the show would be kicking around .... I always loved the lyrics for "Lost Johnny" and "Damage Case" (Metallica seem to like the latter too). I don't know this one but sounds great. I would topical but it has already happened. ;) Jonathan On 21 December 2012 19:46, Carl Edlund Anderson wrote: > Some freshly shameless self-promotion, just in time to coincide with the > apocalypse .... :) > > A new cover of "Aztec Calendar" (originally performed by Mick Farren & The > Deviants) by Espada Negra (that is to say myself and Andy Gilham, ex of > this list) is now available for streaming and/or download from the > following sites: > > http://espadanegra.bandcamp.com/album/aztec-calendar > https://soundcloud.com/espada-negra/aztec-calendar > https://espada-negra.soundawesome.com > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8NZOulWcd0 > > Many here will recall that Mick co-wrote a few songs with Lemmy back in > the day: "Lost Johnny", "Keep Us on the Road", "Damage Case" .... Message-ID: A few things i think were the appeal to me and many others as regards Hawkwind (Paul Eaton-Jones included, who needs som Peace & Love, curmudgeon that he is with all that fun stuff): 1. They predated a different form of rebellion other than just "peace & love" but still flaunted an Urban hippie attitude "without being either", ala Krautrock movement and early punk like Deviants/Pink Fairies etc both scenes to which they were parallel and pre-dated the "fuck all" attitude of '76-77 punk ala Sex Pistols, Stranglers etc. These elements have been documented all over the place as well. 2. They could do "prog" and "dance" without cheesing out or selling out. They changed with the times yet always had the attitude of pioneers, incorporating literate attitude via SF authors and poets like Moorcock and Calvert. They pioneered electronic rock and were along with bands like Roxy Music, Pink Floyd and Van Der Graaf Generator "cutting edge" of the early 70s yet moved on where the other bands disbanded or became old fashioned. Hawkwind were futuristic, always looking ahead. 3. They became symbols of many movements, crossing the bridge between the hippie movement, the punk era and the dance/festival scene as well as NWOBHM. They were the perfect band for me and few bands have had such profound impact on my listening and collecting as Hawkwind. VdGG/Peter Hammill, Here & Now, and The Legendary Pink Dots are the other 3 in my top 4 bands of any desert Island! We all love Hawkwind, and may they carry on for us in the years to come! To Jon Hopkins: Goes to show, Jon, how different HW fan demographics are, I fell IN LOVE in 1988 with the Chronicle of The Black Sword, with Hawkwind. I still think its fantastic stuff. Electric Tepee was a fave of mine as well, at the time of LSD tripping in art school in the early 90s! I NEVER had a fallout of love period with the Hawks EVER. I worshipped the band at the time of Distant Horizons / Capt Rizz era as well, loved it, and the period with Arthur Brown as well. The current ONWARD/HLO stuff is a return to form for me after TMTYL and BOTE albums, both which are not so bad in retrospect. I follow all the side stuff as well from Alan, Swindells, Hawklords, Nik etc, i remember HATING "Prophets of Time" when i bought it at a Tower store in NYC and i thought Nik could not sing at all and did not hold up. This changed when i got the "Past Or Future" and "SR 1994" Cds, and became a follower of Pressurehed, Helios and Chrome as well in the mid 90s, via the BOC-L list i got into BOC, The Moor, The Brain Surgeons as well. Long live HW! Happy New Year from Christian :) From anacondaconan at GMAIL.COM Mon Dec 31 23:20:39 2012 From: anacondaconan at GMAIL.COM (abra cadabra) Date: Tue, 1 Jan 2013 05:20:39 +0100 Subject: HW and bikers Message-ID: Hawkwind attracts biker clubs. My only skirmish with bikers were Pagans MC who the summer of breaking up with one of their strippers, they later that summer went berserk and fired guns at a Blue Angels family fundraiser picnic making the headlines in the Passaic, NJ, area press, in court on the front page of the local Dover NJ paper, was Tails, who "took my woman", the leader of Passaic Chapter of Pagans MC, and a scumbag called Rotten, who once threatened me with a hammer, to break my fingers since i was an art student at the time, when carting off my ex's stuff from our apt where we had lived a couple of months together, this piece o shit, Rotten took a bullet in his spine from a Blue Angel in the back and became a paraplegic, portrayed next to Tails in court over shooting cops. As it was, i was basically a late bloomer in my early 20s (i debuted with the stripper honey at 22, in march 1994, and performed like a latin lover and she fell in love with me as well), though i frequented alot of pubs in Oslo from 1990 onward (18) and hung out in the dives where one could buy hash from various frequenters. One place, Sub Pub, always refused me at the door after a 3-4 years of just going there for a beer and wait for dealers to start showing up and soliciting, and they (the bar) sussed me out. Funny thing is my first g/f worked as a heroin addicted stripper in NJ, and i met her while SHE wuz dancin like vixen while me and the boys went to the strip joint there in Dover, a notorious dive for all Kubert School art students since the 70s, a teacher i had, Tim Harkins had seen Blue ?yster Cult and The Ramones play there even - though i never visited her at work since the first time, cause i had the fuckin bikers wanting to kneecap me for "taking" their woman! She loved my Hawkwind "Raving Looney Party" t-shirt and my CDs with Hawkwind, and she wore it some times ... i hooked up with her on Facebook about a year and half ago, and she is now biker/drug free and is a Yogi who teaches Reiki and Svaroopi Yoga. Ahh, my old flame, Dorothea with the Danzig logo Tramp-stamp tattoo over her ass...... god bless! Time to make some coffee methinks. Peace, Christian.
