If The Hawks do make it back here, I think they should do a southern swing, (and actually hit the northwest, too). That reminds me of a time, several years ago over the Christmas period, when I was visiting the Tampa Bay area of Florida. It was what I considered "shorts and sandals" weather yet I observed the locals going about the place clad in their down jackets muttering and apologising about how "unreasonably cold" the weather was... :-) Last I looked, it was 23 F (-5 C) here in sunny SW Virginia. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Just back from the Lincoln gig -now tucked up in bed with a coffee listening to cricket on the radio and trying out this new netbook. Excellent gig at Lincoln despite the dreadful weather (full marks to the bus for getting through - apparently they've only had to dig it out once!) and a skating rink on the pavements outside - nice venue (if a bit difficult to find) with a big stage but not too high a ceiling so the sound was brilliant. Tim Blake much more to the fore in this one than in Glasgow or Newcastle and played an additional track. Band was very upbeat and though the track list is a rather dark and sombre one it's played with energy passion and lots of bass. Thought Glasgow was a bit lacking in tempo but Newcastle and Lincoln were much faster and more aggressive. Set list as far as I can contrive it: There's a spoken lyric/poem I don't recognise and forgot to ask the name of - Anyone? Spoken intro Shouldn't Do That - an excellent start ? fast lively energetic and intense. Lord of Light ? too slow in Glasgow ?but much more energy in Newcastle and Lincoln. Stilt walkers shrounded in cloaks with long lighted staves. Sonic Attack - nicely ominous and threatening Star Cannibal ? not sure about this one Spoken poem about our desecration of the earth ? dark sonorous bleak but compelling Prometheus ? lovely intro ? nice version + dancers - it's a very well structured track now. Spirit of the Age ? lively much welcomed by all the audience Robot ? nice track but difficult to sustain the energy Warriors Angels of Death ? fast and solid and very compelling watching the skull images on the screen and they really got the tempo and the beat working well at Lincoln - good one. Tide of the Century ?I like this! Lyrical with some nice graphics and a lovely instrumental end. Tim very much up on front stage during this one. Wraith ? not the best version I've heard - seemed a bit unstructured It?s a New Age (in Lincoln) Brainstorm ? very energetic fades a bit in the middle but picks up nicely at the end and with Dave centre stage behind the keyboards all the swirls of light from the projections look as if they are emerging from his head! Very bizarre. Encore - Better Believe It ENDS That's my last for this tour - now all I have to do is hazard a train journey to Edinburgh through the snowdrifts! Just back from the Lincoln gig -now tucked up in bed with a coffee listening to cricket on the radio and trying out this new netbook. I?ve been lurking on BOC-L for a looong time now, but never got around to posting, for some unknown reason. Some of you may recognise my name from years back, but probably not many! I?m one of a small number of keen and dedicated Hawkfans from all the way down in New Zealand. I?d like to think I?m one of the band?s biggest Kiwi fans, but don?t want to presume too much. I only discovered Hawkwind accidentally while at university back in 1996, so a relative newbie compared to most of the BOC-L membership. However, I was immediately captivated by the band and the music. It wasn?t long before I caught up with the Hawk?s immense back catalogue, thanks mainly to Richard at much-missed Cranium Music in NZ, and Sonic Bilby in Oz. My main claim to Hawkfan fame is being one of the few who travelled around the country to see all 6 gigs of Hawkwind?s first and only New Zealand tour in 2000. After contacting the band and the local promoter, I also managed to get myself a job helping to organise the band?s accommodation, and was privileged to spend a good amount of time hanging out with the guys at the venues across the country. Now that was a fan?s dream come true! I have just recently moved to the UK? finally reaching the Hawkwind motherland! It?s hard to believe it?s been 10 years since I last saw Hawkwind live (just missed Hawkfest this year? though there?s always next year), but I?m about to see them once again in Liverpool and Manchester this weekend? and just in time for my birthday? I can?t wait! I?m looking forward to the shows, and to meeting any of you that might be there. Might even be able to share a drink with you before/at the gigs? This is really sad. Like Mike, I'd only just gathered there was a bad reason behind his unusual absence from the list. I've seen Trev be the absolute lynch-pin of a band he'd only just been dropped into, playing brilliantly in two or three different styles in the course of a set on songs he barely knew, and there's no doubt he was a musician through and through. It's a real shame that like so many others he didn't have the chance to get on board one of the vehicles that might have taken him to greater recognition, but he was always excellent company in person even though he and I disagreed about quite a lot. And though he obviously loved being on a stage and grandstanding like a trouper, he was never arrogant in person or online, always careful to make sure a self-deprecating joke was included somewhere. It's just a crying shame. I shall continue to raise a glass for him here and there when I remember, and I don't expect I shall forget given how much there is in my music collection to remember him by. We did work up a live set that was part "Wow!", this track and a few odd covers (I remember NSU by Cream..) ooh.. I've found a rehearsal tape, we did: Starfighter, NSU, Birds, Real One, Virgin Love, 13/35, Mountain Range, Dolphins, Camden Town. That was probably about 40 mins and would have been what we played at the Calvert tribute show at the Brixton Academy with Hawkwind/Man etc.. I produced this recording, it was only a demo really, the drums were done in the drummers garage with a stereo pair of microphones into a cassette deck, and then we did everything else in a friends bedroom 8 track studio. Why was it never released? Your guess is as good as mine, it came between "Wow!" and "History Re-Written" and stylistically was probably representative of neither of them so it floated free...? Or maybe Trev couldn't find another bass player happy to pretend he was in the Shangri-Las and do the high girly vocal! :o) .. Trev & I both love the Shangri-Las.. you don't need to be much of a detective to work that one out! You should have heard the cassette with the drums on! It still stands as the greatest recorded drum sound I've ever heard, 2 shitty microphones straight into a cassette deck in a brick garage with no soundproofing.. brilliant! (All Steve Clarke's work, I can't lay claim to it). My friends bedroom studio was the typical mid 80's Fostex 8 track thing with a small desk and digital reverb unit.. he used to charge ?5 an hour or something like that, ...thinking about it we might have added the guitars to the drums on a cassette portastudio before we got to the 8 track.. fun tho! -S. Angels of Death (private party '89) And what is the title of 28? I seem to recognize it, but I'm drawing a blank on its title. I thought it was The Gremlin in the Air at first, and it hints of an Arthur Brown-related thing. Can't quite make out the lyrics. Thought someone would know here for sure...although it doesn't appear in the setlist for this part of the tape, which has been bootlegged by someone somewhere to CDR - found it listed online. I'm putting this into MPEG-4/AAC via Audacity (nearly finished with *all* my old analog music!), and just want to know so I can more easily do the de-hissing and my own chosen equalization. And I can't watch the thing because I only have the PAL copy (somehow I've lost my NTSC transfer, which would be one gen. further along anyway), so I have to work by audio alone. Of course, I had to slow it down by a factor of 5/6, but that was no problem via Audacity. So I want to group tracks by source so I can simplify the 'cleaning up' process rather than do all 34 tracks individually. Did any of this stuff (audio only) make it onto any official release? A Weird Tape or something? (so as to avoid redundancy with subpar audio) Anyway...just thought I'd ask - you guys are always so knowledgable. Keith H. Well, it doesn't sound like any Treadmill (ie Palace Springs variety) that I have heard before (tho' it is definitely familiar from somewhere). Is this really some portion of Treadmill during the process of its composition? I'm skeptical.
