Very good. The first backer, "Sky" was very ethereal (I fell asleep) but pleasant. The second "Cyndee" was a female violinist who just seemed to be there to make a racket and spoil the mood - we, and a number of others, repaired to the bar to avoid her. Tim/Jean opened with a fairly standard rendition of "Lighthouse", though it did sound more intense with JPR's contribution. That was followed by a funky sounding electronic number which may have been based on something from TotC. Then came "Song for a New Age". This was followed by what I'd travelled there to hear: New Jerusalem. It was a great rendition of the song. I had hoped for some meandering play as on the Waterfalls in Space bootleg tape, but not only didn't they do so but what sounded like a miscuing event meant they cut out much of the instrumental middle section from the song. If anyone was at the other gig, I'd be interested to hear if they played NJ in full. Then came that "Sandman" song whose title I can't remember. They followed this by allowing Cyndee onstage and played something that sounded very Gonglike that I didn't recognise. Then another instrumental I think is from Caldea Music. They encored with a rousing version of Spirit of the Age with Tim finally leading an audience chorus. Tim did at one point make an impassioned point about the iniquity of being jailed for having four billionths of a gram of THC in one's blood when one's automobile is run into by a completely drunk idiot who dies in the collision. It does sound as if he now fully expects a stint in jail soon as a result of that unfortunate incident. If anyone then obtains the address of the prison, I'll be happy to send a letter. God knows his music has cheered me up during low times and I'm sure he'll need any morale-boosting that's going. The hall is small and it wasn't very packed. As usual I was followed around the hall by two pairs of retards who'd apparently come to chat about everything and sundry rather than listen to the music. It's quite baffling really: there was a perfectly good cafe outside where they could have chatted for free and where there wouldn't be some musicians making a nuisance of themselves and forcing them to shout to make themelves heard. Love'n'Peace is all very well, but it doesn't help deal with these morons. Hanging's too good for 'em. But perhaps I'm simply recovering from my stint on a jury earlier this week... Anyway, they were both on great form and clearly enjoying themselves, and it was a pleasure to attend. next day was very sunny and we had a walk up the canal for some excellent food and beer at the "Double Locks". It's probably too far to use prior to any future Exeter gigs but I found another three very excellent pubs there that will certainly suffice. It can sound quite haunting and ethereal but needed a rather more delicate touch than it was given on this occasion. Not the best track of the evening but overall it was indeed an excellent show and well worth the journey down. Jean Phillippe added extra layers and depth to the sound and when they were playing keyboards together Jean Phillippe was able to interweave his melodies through Tim Blake's themes and created a gorgeous, surprisingly full sound but there wasn't nearly enough of it and it didn't go on nearly long enough! I was entirely stunned/mesmerised by the beauty of it - dancing quite happily around the place - most people were - and though it was a small audience there was no doubt at all about their appreciation. They made enough noise at the end for twice as many! The two morons started off in front of me but then thankfully moved away. They were surprisingly young, but had clearly heard Tim Blake playing before, perhaps several times, but they were very, very drunk (or something equivalent) and though obviously enjoying every minute this seemed to take the form of relating this fact to each other very loudly at distressingly regular intervals. But apart from that it was a thoroughly satisfactory and emotionally relaxing evening and I felt entirely content afterwards which doesn't often happen after a gig. And to anyone who missed it - my sympathies - you missed a good one. Good luck to Tim in the coming months and my good wishes and support for whatever lies ahead. jill ============================================== Jill Strobridge ============================================== From StevePXR5 at AOL.COM Thu Sep 7 18:16:37 2006 From: StevePXR5 at AOL.COM (StevePXR5 at AOL.COM) Date: Thu, 7 Sep 2006 18:16:37 EDT Subject: OFF: waterfalls in space gig in exeter Message-ID: But when it's finished you will be able to make bigger meals. I have heard the music a few times now and watched the DVD last night. I think this one is for sure only for hard core fans. I loved the new version of Uncle Sams on Mars but disliked what they did to Silver Machine. Pretty amazed that Lemmy sounded so great singing the w version but this electronic stuff in the middle and this totally out of character jam at the end..Ugh... When you watch the DVD, just skip the Steppenwolf one or at least turn the picture of and listen to the rehearsal with Ron Tree... The Astoria DVD looks like it will be great based on the single camera and very good audio on the DVD.. A real mixed bag this release... some good and some bad stuff.. Others have comments?? Any idea when the following HW DVDs will come out: 1. Space Bandits 2. Treworgy Festival 1989 3. Astoria London 2005 4. hawkfest 5. Roadburn The Roadburn should be fantastic if the editing is good as the gig was a barnstormer and the audio mix you can hear streaming at the VPRO is great.. scott OBCD: Trigon- Herzberg 2004 From StevePXR5 at AOL.COM Sun Sep 17 11:56:43 2006 From: StevePXR5 at AOL.COM (StevePXR5 at AOL.COM) Date: Sun, 17 Sep 2006 11:56:43 EDT Subject: HW: Take me to your Future Message-ID: You mean you didn't like the dancer? Cool. My old CD sounded worse than the vinyl (though I haven't had access to an LP player for over 15 years, so it didn't really matter), but a shiny new version of SoG is, yup, well over due and most welcome :) Anyone know what's up with Wyndorf since his overdose? Message-ID: Hi Jon. I had the pleasure of conducting three of the interviews you referenced in your e-mail regarding the new issue of Aural-Innovations. Those are the ones with Dave Brock, Nick Saloman, and Mr. Dibs. They were all done via e-mail. I was very grateful that all three of these artists took the time out to participate in these interviews. In fairness to Dave Brock, I must mention that I had been given an opportunity by Hawkwind's manager Kris Tait, to conduct a face-on interview while in Holland, which I had to decline owing to illness at the time. (Yeah...still kicking myself.) And so Dave was nice enough to help me by doing his interview online after I returned to the states, owing to my inability to meet him for the real chat that we had previously arranged. My thanks go out to all the artists involved for taking some time for "just us fans" to do these interviews. Much appreciated! I see Eli responded regarding the interviews he conducted. I interviewed Don Falcone by phone. So having the the opportunity to chat live, plus his ability/willingness to articulate his work in detail, made for what I think was a great interview. I love doing interviews that way and if I had a secretary to transcribe tapes for me I'd do them all live. Very pleased to hear you like the Action Man tales. I'm no literary expert but I think they are truly unique and would love for everyone to give them a read. As for the Action Man project between Roger and Don, it would be an album. As for Earthling Society.... hmmmmmm... it's been a while since I did that interview so I might need to re-read it. I've only communicated with them by email and they've always seemed really down to earth. I can only say that if you haven't heard them yet they are really outstanding. Thanks again! While not really well known, he was a musician with Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes and played on the *Survival Of the Fittest* album. Apparently he lived very low key, since he lived here in Lakeland Florida where I work, and never seemed to play any live gigs in the area. But I always hate to hear of any musicians from my era dying, it makes me feel my age... tim 8>)... http://heathcliff13.blogspot.com
