Your cynicism is well founded.
Checking for availability before you order sounds like a good idea, if they
give you a straight answer. They might just have a few copies left around
somewhere. I think that's what happened when I ordered my copy from
insound.com. I checked their list the next day after ordering, I think, and
they had removed Alien 4 from their list.
Guess I lucked out and got their last copy.
