>with The Animals and manager of Jimi Hendrix.

Report from the Daily Mirror follows.

Veteran rocker Chas Chandler - bass guitarist with the 60's group The Animals - died from a suspected heart attack yesterday. He was 57.

The star died in his sleep at Newcastle upon Tyne General Hospital where he had been undergoing tests. He had been ill for two months.

Chandler was a founder member of The Animals whose biggest hit, House of the Rising Sun, made No.1 in June 1964.

After the group split, he became manager of guitarist Jimi Hendrix.

He then launched the British band, Slade, who regularly topped the charts in the 70's.

Later, Chandler - a father of four wed to former Miss UK Madeline Stringer - helped found Newcastle's £1.5million Arena concert centre.

Former Slade singer Noddy Holder said yesterday: "I'm shocked. I saw Chas two weeks ago. He looked fine."

Cheers,

Rich.
